Aminu, who had just completed his National Youth Service, died when soldiers raided homes of people involved in a dispute at the town’s main checkpoint.
The clash happened on Tuesday between supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) returning from a local election campaign. One of the injured, Babawo Lauwawu, said the incident began when soldiers began enforcing a curfew, which was announced at 10 pm.
He and others had already gone inside their homes by 9 pm, but heard gunshots before the curfew began. Lauwawu was shot in the leg during the chaos and did not understand why the shooting occurred despite their compliance.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that the officers responsible would be held accountable. A team of detectives has been assigned to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, assured that a detailed and professional investigation will be conducted to ensure justice.
